How To Wear A Shirt Dress 10 Ways
O ne of my most loved closet staples has been the shirt dress . I've had various ones for the last 20 years and can't get over how versatile it is. This dress will stand the test of time because it's so comfortable, classic and can be worn so many different ways. Today I am sharing tips on how to style the shirt dress to get maximum wear out of it.
When it comes to the shirt dress the options to wear it are endless, which is why I love it. The more ways you can wear a piece the more your money works for you. Who doesn't love when their clothing items can be worn multiple ways for multiple years? It can be dressed down and feel super cozy to lounge in. And on the other hand it can be dressed up to look chic for an easy summer night out. In today's post I am sharing with you 10 ways to wear your shirt dress, but first let me introduce you to the featured dress.
Long Weekend Tee Dress
The shirt dress I'm featuring today was sent c/o Everlane and is the Long Weekend Tee Dress . It comes in six solid colors, with some classic staples, like this navy color and show stopping fun colors like Azalea , which is a bright pink. This shirt dress is a midi length, which you know I love. You can read about my must have midi dress here .
It's a relaxed cotton that is lightweight which makes it ideal for layering. I love that it is sleeveless because you can really wear it from Spring to Fall with the proper layers. In terms of sizing it runs large. I'm wearing a medium here and could have gone down to a small. I always use my hip measurement as the base for sizing on the size charts. For items that are "relaxed" I find my size and then go down a size.
The shirt dress was designed to be casually worn, however there are so many other ways to wear the dress. You can literally dress it up or down and wear it for just about any occasion you have. Check out the best 10 ways to wear the shirt dress and various outfit ideas below.
As Is Shirt Dress
The shirt dress is perfectly fine as is. It's comfortable and can be worn with just about any shoes. From sneakers to chunky heels pair it with whatever you want. I love the shirt dress as is with a flat sandal, like the pair I'm wearing .
Blousy Shirt Dress
I'm a huge fan of belting everything. Belting the shirt dress and blousing it over shortens the dress and makes it look like a completely different dress. Simply belt the dress when it is full length and then pull it up to blouse it over the belt. Pair this look with chunky heels and off you go to brunch with the gals.
Sneakers and a Shirt Dress
Run your weekend errands in this look. I like to dress down the shirt dress with white sneakers and a denim jacket. My denim jacket is a go-to as a light layer for spring.
Belted Shirt Dress
Anytime you can add a belt, you should. It defines your waist and makes you look thinner. I've been collecting belts for years to wear because belts rarely go out of style. If you are looking for a few starter belts you can find one here and here .
Layered Shirt Dress
By layering a short sleeve top over the dress it gives the appearance that you are wearing a maxi skirt. It's all about versatility with this look. Pair this with the day crossover sandal and you're ready to hit the park.
Summer Shirt Dress
The shirt dress is the perfect summer dress when paired with a bright patterned scarf (I love this one ) , a flat sandal and a saddle bag . It is ideal for errands during the day and drinks at sunset.
Scarf Shirt Dress
Even though it's hot out all summer I always have a scarf with me. I might get cold at any moment. Belting the scarf over the shirt dress provides a dressed up element to the dress as well as a great layering piece.
Chambray Top and a Shirt Dress
Pull out the chambray top you've had for years and put it to good use. On a cooler night you can layer the chambray top over the shirt dress and a flat sandal. I love this look for drinks on the patio or outdoor deck.
Chambray Top Take 2 Shirt Dress
During the day you can tie your chambray top around your waist. It's an easy way to add an extra layer for when the weather changes quickly during the day. Keep this look casual with a pair of sneakers, these are my favorite .
All Tied Up Shirt Dress
When it gets extra hot out and you need to cool down you can tie up the bottom of your dress. It also makes a longer dress knee length. This look is perfect for the beach or a hot summer day enjoying cocktails.
Can you believe that one dress can have 10 different looks? The versatility of the shirt dress is unbelievable. Which way do you like to wear the shirt dress? Let me know in the comments below.
